Pregnancy – About Twins https://about-twins.com Fri, 06 Mar 2020 22:13:35 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.8.2 The Day Nemo Flipped Into a Breech Position https://about-twins.com/pregnancy/twins-giving-birth-breech/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=twins-giving-birth-breech https://about-twins.com/pregnancy/twins-giving-birth-breech/#comments Thu, 06 Jun 2019 06:56:25 +0000 https://about-twins.com/?p=11508 With our firstborn, we had prenatal care from a local midwifery clinic and had a natural home-birth attended by wonderful midwives. Our son was born in our bed, and we were hoping to do the same for our second child. When we found out we were having twins, our plans had to change. In Canada, if you are pregnant with twins, you are automatically considered a high-risk pregnancy.

Twice the prenatal appointments

I was already with a midwife before we found out about the twins so I was able to stay under her care, but because midwives specialize in normal, low risk pregnancies, I also had to have an obstetrician that specialized in high-risk multiple births. Luckily we found one that was willing to work with us. This meant we had twice the prenatal appointments, but we had excellent care. We were able to go to the midwife for our monthly visits and then saw our obstetrician after every ultrasound, and there were a lot of ultrasounds.

Flipped into a feet first breech position

We knew I would have to give birth in the hospital, midwives are not able to attend home births for multiples or high risk pregnancies. We had also been advised that the majority of multiples (but not all) are born by c-section, but I was hoping for a vaginal birth and as close to possible, one without interventions. That all changed when we went for our 30 week scan and found out that Twin A (Nemo as named by his 4 year old brother) had flipped into a feet first breech position, and that Twin B’s (Saturn) head was tangled up in twin A’s feet. If we wanted a vaginal birth we had to try and turn one kid around fast.

Lighting a piece of incense on fire

Thus began weeks of lunges, headstands, stretches, yoga poses, acupuncture treatments and Moxibustion (which involves lighting a piece of incense on fire and holding the ember close to your pinky toe – not painful, but not the most fun thing to do). All designed to try and turn a breech baby. I tried anything that our doctor, midwife or random google search advised to turn that kid, and no luck. Nemo wasn’t going anywhere. At 37 weeks our ob advised us that it was time for the babies to come out. They were born by c-section, both healthy and both weighing exactly 5lbs, 9oz (2523 grams).

Twins Came As a Surprise https://about-twins.com/pregnancy/twin-pregnancy-surprise/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=twin-pregnancy-surprise Mon, 06 May 2019 05:59:28 +0000 https://about-twins.com/?p=11421 The first sign that things were not quite as expected, was when my husband made a joke to the ultrasound technician at our 10 week scan, “Well at least we know there’s only one in there.” She was halfway through the scan and her face took on this look of awkward surprise and concern, but she didn’t say anything. Because it was early in the pregnancy, you never know what those looks mean. I quietly steeled myself for bad news, maybe this one wasn’t what we were expecting, maybe it wasn’t going to work out this time. She finished the scan and turned to my husband, “well, I’ve got a surprise for the peanut gallery” then pointed the screen to show us two little beings with beating hearts. Twins. We were having twins. To say we were shocked would be an understatement.

Took time to get used to the idea of twins

We thought we would go for a second. Our son was 4, we were out of baby survival mode and even starting to feel like we had our heads above water again. We kind of knew what we were doing baby-wise, right? Why not have a second? We tried for 2, and got, well, two. Surprise! It took some time to get used to the idea.

Twin pregnancy announcement

When we broke the news to our families, we let our 4 year-old do the big announcement. Over Skype calls to the grandparents, he gleefully shouted:

“We’re having babies!”

“You’re what?”

“We’re having babies!”

“A baby?”

“No, babies…”

“BABIES?”

“BABIES! Yes, we’re having twins.”

“Twins?”

“Twins!”

There must be something in the water

Joy and excitement, fear and trepidation all mixed into one as the news sunk in. Turns out these feelings go along with twins every step of the way. We had so many questions. How would we fit two more kids in our small home? How would we afford daycare for three kids? How do you feed two babies at once? I sought out as much advice from neighbors and friends as I could – funny enough we have four sets of twins on our small neighborhood block. There must be something in the water.

Twin Baby Shower Gifts: Ideas for Twin Boys & Girls https://about-twins.com/pregnancy/twin-baby-shower-gifts/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=twin-baby-shower-gifts Tue, 30 Apr 2019 06:43:48 +0000 https://about-twins.com/?p=6665 If you’re looking for twin baby shower gifts, you may be asking yourself what to buy, and whether or not you should give one gift per child. If you can afford it, a gift for each baby is nice. It signals that you consider the children as individuals, and that you are sensitive to the fact that the cost of raising twins is higher than raising one child. If it’s too expensive for you to spend double the amount on twin baby shower gifts, consider buying something for the mom-to-be. It could for instance be a twin nursing pillow, books about having twins or twin baby memory books.

What about the twin baby shower registry?

It’s good etiquette to ask whether or not there is a registry, and to take a look at it before you buy gifts. You don’t necessarily need to go with it, if you have a great idea of you own, but the family usually puts a lot of time and thought into the registry. Take a peek at it to find out if there’s something they really seem to need.

Care During Twin Pregnancy: How to Cope with Hypertension & Swelling https://about-twins.com/pregnancy/prenatal-care-twin-pregnancy/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=prenatal-care-twin-pregnancy Mon, 08 Apr 2019 09:52:51 +0000 https://about-twins.com/?p=10368 With no family history of twins, I was surprised, I conceived twins. I was so excited to find out why it happened to me! Some careful investigation led us to the fact that there was a history of twins in my family, which I came to know of much later. Two generations ahead of mine. And before we knew it, my cousin soon followed suit – and so here we are, now a family of twins.

Hypertension and oedema caused a few issues

As with all pregnancies, each has its own specific problems and complications. Mine was no exception. The first trimester was uneventful, and it was just routine check-up’s and regular medication. But the second trimester increase in body weight and body fluids was a cause of concern. The scans showed good fetal development. All the organs of the fetuses were developing and showed no anomalies. This was a good sign. Personally my hypertension (high blood pressure) and oedema (swelling) caused a few issues. I was told to remain calm and stress free, for this the mind had to be trained. Meditation, prayers and exercises helped to a large extent. Taking medicine prescribed by the gynecologist on time and being regular with check-ups helped in easing the pressure.

A few tips I followed:

  1. Avoiding salt and spices helped in reducing blood pressure and helped to stabilise it.
  2. Increasing my intake of fluids helped, water boiled with cumin seeds was a natural cure to relieve indigestion.
  3. Oedema and pain caused by fluid retention was treated with Ayurveda (ancient Indian medicinal system) oils. These oils also helped the skin during stretching and reduced soreness and dryness caused around the nipples.

Drastic weight increase and stress

The weight increase was so drastic that I was looking full term in my seventh month, and I did not disclose that I was carrying twins. This was done so that too much speculation during conversation with others could be avoided. My appetite was normal, and I tried eating healthy, but heart burn and indigestion was making it a little difficult. No matter how much advice is followed, or precaution taken, each day of a pregnancy poses new challenges. Anxiety and stress is a part of this situation. I was more concerned that my family should not be stressed due to my condition.

Delivery by c-section

On the night of 28 August 1999, 8 days before my due date, my water broke. I was rushed to the hospital. The doctors assured us that we had time and nothing would go wrong. With the spasms of back pain being severe, I was rushed to surgery for a c-section due to one of the twins being in breech position. I delivered my twins well past midnight each weighing 2500 grams (5lbs, 8oz) and 2000 grams (4lbs, 6oz) respectively.

My experience of pregnancy was unforgettable. The challenges were there, but the anticipation of happiness always kept me going. As the children were safely delivered all these trials seemed worth it.

Study Explores Diabetes in Women Pregnant with Twins https://about-twins.com/pregnancy/diabetes-women-pregnant-with-twins/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=diabetes-women-pregnant-with-twins Mon, 25 Mar 2019 04:10:32 +0000 https://about-twins.com/?p=11125 A new study explores whether or not diabetes is less likely to be associated with unfavorable outcomes in twin pregnancies compared with singleton pregnancies. The study was published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. All twin and singleton births in Ontario, Canada, from 2012-2016, were included in the study. 270,843 women pregnant with singletons and twins were included in the study. The two groups were compared. The researchers adjusted for the age of the mothers, whether they had given birth before, whether they smoked, race, BMI, pre-existing hypertension and whether or not the babies were conceived by assisted reproductive technology.

Higher rates of c-section and preterm birth

The study found that diabetes in pregnancy was associated with higher rates of c-section and preterm birth in both singletons and twins. It was also associated with accelerated fetal growth and jaundice. However, there were a few outcomes that only applied to singletons who had mothers with gestational diabetes. That was hypertension, preeclampsia, admission to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), respiratory morbidity and neonatal hypoglycemia.

Researches Look for Genetical Explanation of Vanishing Twin Syndrome https://about-twins.com/pregnancy/vanishing-twin-syndrome-genetic/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=vanishing-twin-syndrome-genetic Mon, 18 Mar 2019 07:10:40 +0000 https://about-twins.com/?p=11093 A Turkish study looks at Vanishing Twin Syndrome and whether or not there could be a genetic reason behind it. The study was published in the Journal of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics. The researchers looked at a possible link to methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) polymorphisms. The MTHFR gene provides instructions for making an enzyme called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase. It has many important functions. Among other things it plays a role in processing amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. Four groups were included in the study. 38 women with Vanishing Twin Syndrome pregnancies, 109 singleton pregnancies, 70 spontaneous twin pregnancies and 101 twin pregnancies conceived after assisted reproductive technology.

Results

21.1 percent of the pregnancies with Vanishing Twin Syndrome resulted in a miscarriage of the second twin. The women in this loss group had the highest prevalence of earlier losses compared with the other groups. The researchers also found that the Vanishing twin pregnancy group had a higher frequency of MTHFR 677 and MTHFR 1298 – higher than those in a healthy population. The researchers concluded that MTHFR polymorphisms may play an incidental or factual role in connection with Vanishing Twin Syndrome.
